In this blog post, I’m sharing my top tips on how to get more Instagram followers in 2020 – all organic AND fast. So read this post to learn how you can finally grow the Instagram audience you deserve and dream to have.
Before we dive deep into this post, let me tell you that I’ve made a video covering all the things in this blog post, too. So if you’re more of a visual learner, check this video.
In 2020 it’s all about getting more intentional with Instagram if you want to get more followers. That means, less posting “just to post” and more posting “because it’s valuable”.
2020 is all about intentional content!
This may not seem like big news, but with likes disappearing country by country, it only gets more important to create content that your target audience actually enjoys and appreciates.
I regularly speak to people being frustrated by their growth (or rather the lack thereof) on Instagram. They feel like they’re investing all this time producing content and the engagement just decreases day after day. Does that sound familiar to you?
Now, here’s the thing: If you started your account quite some time ago, the algorithm and the platform overall worked differently than it does now. That means: if you’re still making the same type of content and use the same strategies you used back then, chances are that you’re not making any progress in regards to getting more followers/engagement.
You can’t use your 2015 strategy in 2020!
As always, you have to adapt to change. For some reason, many people are not doing that on Instagram. They do what they’ve always done and wonder why the masses aren’t jumping on their profile being super invested in what they’re doing.
So, if you are serious about wanting to get more followers on Instagram in 2020, re-evaluate your content strategy. Are you aware of the latest trends? Which posts did perform well? Which didn’t? Really take some time and figure out what will work for you, rather than spending all this time making content that nobody will see.
Create sharable content to get more followers on Instagram in 2020
Technically, every post is sharable on Instagram, but what I mean by sharable content is to create content that is much more likely going to be shared. To give you a very (!) basic example: What do you think will be shared more – a selfie or a recipe?
Right, the recipe. I do want to point out, though, that obviously the sharability of your piece of content depends highly on your audience. If you’re usually sharing tips on how to train your puppy and then you’re suddenly talking about lasagne, your audience probably won’t share the lasagne post with their audience.
Generally speaking, quotes that are directly related to your niche and obstacles that lots of people in your niche are facing usually work really well when it comes to sharing. That is especially because they can be shared in someone’s story without any additional text and still spread the message.

Create innovative Content
It doesn’t matter if you aspire to work as a content creator (e.g. Influencer) or if you are looking to grow your business, you want to create unique innovative content that comes from no one else but you.
While it is smart to follow trends to gain visibility and stay up-to-date, I recommend adding your unique twist to it whenever you can. Don’t just jump onto every trend, but think twice on if it fits your brand or how you could make it fit your brand.
Remember: You don’t get more Instagram followers by being a follower yourself. Show up as a leader!
Personally, I even went as far as unfollowing quite a few people who were doing similar things as me because I wanted to fully reconnect with my own creativity and not see what others are doing every day.
So the goal here is to ask yourself “What would I do? Which piece of content would I enjoy seeing? What do I think is a smart thing to do?”
Especially when it comes to Instagram, and Social Media in general, people are always on the hunt for the next big trick to go viral. They consume tons and tons of information in hopes to gain a crazy amount of new Instagram followers instead of simply being empathetic and then creating unique content from there.
Nurture Relationships with existing Followers
Building relationships on Instagram is key if you want to drive sales from Instagram. This goes especially for small businesses. However, most business owners are looking to grow their following (most often without having a strategy on what that’s supposed to do for them) and they fail to nurture the audience that’s already there.
I’m sure you don’t actually care to get more followers on Instagram. What you care about is the growth of your business. Now, if you can’t turn a single follower out of 200 followers into a client, you may also fail to convert one of 20.000 followers into a client.
By building and growing relationships with people who are interested in what you do, you increase your chances of making sales immensely. Therefore, the key is to go deeper, not wider. Focus on the audience that’s already there, turn them into evangelists for your brand and you will get more Instagram followers through that.
At this point, my audience gives me free, unasked shoutouts all the time because they genuinely love my work and want to support me. I don’t know how many followers I’ve gotten through that but I regularly ask new followers how they found my account and often they name followers of mine.
Show your face, show faces of your brand, make things personal if you want to get more Instagram followers in 2020. It is still a social network so treat it that way.
Far too many companies (big and small) hide behind corporate images or even stock photos on Instagram. Do not do this! Don’t hide behind graphics and stock images. It makes you miss out on a lot of great opportunities on the platform. This not only applies to the Instagram feed but Instagram stories as well. Ideally, you don’t just share photos of them and you, but video as well. Videos allow a much more personal connection than photos, so make use of that!
If someone lands on your Instagram account, the goal is to convert them from a visitor into a follower (in the first step). By offer people an easy way to connect with you on a personal level you are increasing those chances massively. People connect with people, not with fancy graphics and stock images.
Build a strong Personal Brand!
Personal brands are the past and the future. Having a strong personal brand has always worked to people’s advantage because it leads people to associate certain feelings and vibes with you.
The good (and bad) thing is: not many people have cracked the code on how to use a personal brand to their advantage. This is good because you will benefit even more from having a strong personal brand. The bad part about it is that lots of potential gets lost due to weak personal brands.
The topic is huge and I don’t want to go into depth about this in this post, but you can read this article to learn more about personal branding and how you can use it to grow your business and following on Instagram.
